Our “How To” guides are a continuing series of articles demonstrating simple ways to implement the most commonly requested features for running a successful e-commerce business on Shopify. In this article we’ll teach you about ‘product upsells’ and how to add them to your online shop.

‘Product upsells’ are popups with featured products that are shown to your customers based on criteria that you define. These popups can trigger based on items that are added to a customer’s cart, or based on total cart value or quantity. ‘Product upsells’ are an excellent tool for increasing your e-commerce sales due to the fact that they are shown to customers that have already shown interest in purchasing items from your online shop. There are numerous ‘product upsell’ apps on the Shopify App Store, and they all boast excellent stats on conversion rates and returns on investment!

Below we’ll show you a step-by-step guide to integrating our preferred ‘product upsells’ app, and how to create your first product upsell offer.

Step 2: That’s it! Product Upsell installs any necessary code into a special section of your Shopify theme called “content for header.” This means you needn’t manually install any snippets of code to your theme.

Creating an “Add to Cart” Product Upsell Offer

The next thing you’ll want to do is create your first offer! Product Upsell offers three different methods for displaying offers, but we’ll go over the most common: “Add to Cart.”

Step 1: Click “Current Offers” then “Create New”

Step 5a: Select Offer Trigger, (i.e. the product(s) which will trigger the offer, and other parameters about the offer such as cart pricing or limited-time offerings.

You can simply repeat these steps to create multiple ‘product upsell’ popups on your e-commerce store and start increasing your conversions with thoughtful and hand-tailored product pairings, suggestions, and other offers for your customers!
