Shopify Design and Development Updates: August 2015 Edition

2015 has been a huge year for Shopify! Not only has the platform surpassed 175,000 active stores, the company also had an IPO this spring that has valued the Shopify (as of the date of this article) at almost $3.0 Billion. We're very excited about all of this momentum for the company, but particularly excited about where the platform itself has been heading over the last 8 or so months. With a number of major feature releases, we felt it would be helpful for our clients to get a run-down on the latest Shopify design and development news and the impact it could have on their business. Here are some of the key things to be aware of with the platform:

Drafts Feature

Shopify has introduced a new feature called 'Drafts' that allows you to manually create orders directly within Shopify. In the past, the only way to process manual orders was by 'pretending' to be the customer or using a third-party app. Either method still left you needing to have the customer's credit card in hand. The Drafts feature allows you to either process payment immediately with a credit or email an invoice to the client for them to pay separately. You can also customize discounts, shipping and line-items within each individual order.

New Storefront Editor / Theme Settings Manager

Shopify has introduced a new storefront editor that makes customizing and previewing changes to your theme significantly easier. Theme changes can now be previewed across desktop, tablet and mobile screen sizes. In addition, Shopify has changed how theme settings can be added providing more flexibility for developers, like us, to provide our clients with enhanced theme settings management.

Schemaless URLs

Less of a feature and more of a compliance/standards change, Shopify will no longer support hardcoded "http" URLs directly in themes or apps. This change ensures merchants and their customers have a secure experience from end to end. We've been working with our clients to help them ensure their themes are up-to-date on these changes.

Bulk Editing

Shopify has introduced a 'bulk editing' feature across products, collections, customers, blog posts and pages. This allows you to simultaneously edit multiple attributes across objects of the same type in a singular view. This makes managing attributes such as price, tags, SEO Data, etc. considerably easier as an admin.

Multichannel Shopify

Shopify has truly restructured its platform from being a pure shopping cart to serving as a multi-channel commerce platform. They've added the concept of 'sales channels' where merchants can control each of the channels they use to sell their products including their online store, POS, mobile and third-party markets. Although the number of channels is still somewhat limited, this change represents a huge shift in Shopify's thinking and perspective on what role the platform will serve for its merchants.

For companies interested in adding a 'Buy Button' to websites other than Facebook or Pinterest, Shopify has added a generalized Shopify Buy Button that can be embedded in any third-party website. These buttons can be setup as full product views or just a single buy button and link the user to the product page, shopping cart or directly to checkout.
